“Rights of Thieves”: State Lawmaker Insists Stealing for “Biological” Need Shouldn’t Be Illegal

(WND)—Some stealing is bad, apparently.

Other stealing is good.

That’s the verdict from Emily Gallagher, a Democratic Socialist who is in the New York state assembly.

“Most of what we saw were crimes of poverty-people who are stealing things like toothpaste, people who were stealing things like, you know, soap. And that means if you’re stealing those things, you need them,” said Gallagher, representing parts of Brooklyn.

She was commenting on theft, shoplifting and other cases during a news conference at Manhattan Criminal Court.

It was held by leftists with Court Watch NYC. The group monitored 360 cases in the court and claimed half were for misdemeanors.

It is the RAIR Foundation that documented the comments by the community organizer advocating for the “rights of thieves.”

“And we are choosing to protect billion-dollar companies, like CVS and Walgreens, over the people who are struggling to get by. So, I would say that the true crime is that there is such incredible wealth disparity in this city that there are people who can be thrown in jail simply for having a biological need,” she railed.

Of course, rampant theft frequently will cause businesses to fail, and close.

The foundation report explained, “The raging leftists at the news conference called on communist Muslim Mayor Zohran Mamdani to keep his campaign promise to end ‘broken windows policing’ tactics by NYPD cops that target quality-of-life crimes like graffiti and fare evasion. It’s the communist way. That practice, by the way, allowed former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani and the NYPD to regain control of the streets.”

The report noted New York City leftists want to be handing out “a license to go on crime sprees.”

“Gallagher is a very strange politician in her own right. She has a long list of less-than-ethical remarks and actions on her resume since she was sworn into the Assembly in January 2021, including using a GoFundMe campaign in October 2021 to raise money for her cat Roland’s emergency surgery bill.
She has also been cited with dozens of traffic and parking tickets despite pushing an anti-car agenda in Albany. Over 46 of them as of 2024, and surely a lot more than that by now. Gallagher also adheres to the tried-and-true leftist tactic of blocking constituents from posting comments she doesn’t like on her social media pages,” RAIR explained.

Former Queens Councilman Robert Holden, a moderate Democrat, bluntly said, “[Gallagher] is a major dope.”

Councilwoman Joann Ariola, from Queens said, “This is the kind of backwards, left-wing lunacy I would expect from someone who values the rights of criminals more than those of business owners.”
