(WND)—Poland, often considered one of the more stable and more conservative nations across the landscape of Europe, sudden has been wracked by what could be an attempted coup.

It was Prime Minister Donald Tusk who waited until President Karol Nawrocki was out of the country, heading to Senegal, when he dispatched police to take over the operations of the nation’s top constitutional court, the Constitutional Tribunal.

As of late Friday, Nawrocki was on his way back, having ordered his plane to turn around, and violence was developing at the court.

According to Just the News, “Poland appears to be in a state of constitutional crisis.”

Reports revealed a “de facto power struggle” had erupted.

“For now, the outcome of this confrontation remains uncertain. Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska called the police to the grounds of the Constitutional Tribunal, citing a potential threat to the safety of judges and staff. Police did not enter the building, but a significant number of officers have been deployed in the surrounding area. Korwin-Piotrowska suspended Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sochański, for one month, temporarily taking charge of the institution herself,” reports explained.

The moves amounted to a “coup,” critics charged.

According to Just the News, Tusk claimed to be after a restoration of the rule of law.

Newsday said dozens of protesters gathered.

The fight has been between the current pro-European government and an opposition party, the Law and Justice organization.

There are accusations politicians have been influencing court rulings.
