(DCNF)—Fox Business host Charles Payne said Monday that President Joe Biden’s failure to halt a potential strike by dockworkers was “really dangerous” for the American economy.
Thousands of International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) members at dozens of ports could potentially strike at midnight Tuesday, halting operations from Texas to Maine, The New York Times reported. Biden told reporters he would likely not intervene, saying he opposed the Taft-Harley Act which authorizes him to impose a “cooling off” period, according to NBC News.
“He’s playing a very, very dangerous game,” Payne told “America Reports” co-host Sandra Smith about the labor dispute. “A really dangerous game and I think that what happened with the weather and the storms over the weekend makes it more so. I mean, we’re talking about, we heard the prior guest talking about food, 53% of ag imports and waterborne imports, the vehicle market. You know, just eggs, poultry, beef. It just goes on and on and on. Here’s the rule of thumb. So, for every one day it shuts down, it translates to five days of disruption.”

The strike could disrupt nearly half of imports into the United States, according to a study from MITRE Corporation. Supply chain interruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the rise of inflation to a high of 9.1% in June 2022.
The Cleveland Branch of the Federal Reserve estimated that as much as 60% of inflation in 2021 and 2022 was driven by supply chain issues. Larry Summers, who served as Treasury secretary under then-President Bill Clinton, and former Obama administration economic adviser Brett Rattner both warned of the potential for inflation resulting from Biden’s proposed spending in 2021.
Smith outlined a wide variety of products that would be affected by the strike.
“It’s everything from the things that you put in your bathroom, or your grocery, your cupboard shelves every day to automobiles. And you are talking about inflation that timing wise… politically isn’t there an incentive for Biden to step in here and make this not happen?” Smith asked.
“He’s playing an extraordinarily dangerous game with American lives and the political future of his own party,” Payne said, before he predicted the strike wouldn’t last more than “four or five days.”
